GIS, Geographic Information System, is a digital mapping format which allows for connection of spatial data (parcels, roads, rivers, ponds, ect..) and attibutes (ownership, size, ect..) to create an interactive viewing experience for the end user.

- The Wells County GIS office is in the process of purchasing a TOPCON Hyper Ga RTK GPS reciever to expand the offices spatial data collection capabilities.
- The Wells County GIS website is now upgraded to the new Schneider Co. Beacon Website format thanks to a Homeland Security Grant obtained by the Wells County GIS office and Wells County EMA office this year.

- Currently Updating the Road Centerline Data to increase of the accuracy of the Wells County 911 Dispatch Center.

The Wells County GIS website links data for the Wells County Area Plan Commission, Wells County Auditor, Wells County Assessor, and Wells County Surveyor together to promote public access to spatial and attribute data.
The Wells County GIS Office has four (4) duties
1. We maintain and perpare the office finances as approved by the Wells County Council.
2. We maintain, repair, and update existing spatial and attribute data for Wells County and Wells County Emergency Services (police, fire, medical).
3. We promote other local government agencies and offices to participate in the Wells County GIS system. The participation allows the agencies and offices to work more effectively due to the spatial and attribute resouces at the their finger tips.
4. We collect field information through GPS, Glopoal Posisition System, to create new spatial data to add to the Wells County GIS System. We also imput new attribute data to link to the spatial data at the time of collection.

Michael W. Lautzenheiser Jr. has been the Wells County Area Plan Commission Director since May 5, 2006. He graduated from Ball State University with a Bachelor of Urban Planning and Design. In college, he worked with government bodies in Frankfort, IN, Muncie, IN, and Shelbyville, IN. His experiences in the field include two internships at the Wells County Area Plan Commission and several in school studio projects.
Michael also has a concentration in Global Information Systems (GIS) from Ball State University. The Wells County GIS system will continue to expand with his experience.
